Bringer of luck

Helleborus is a member of the family of Ranunculaceae just like the buttercup. The name Helleborus is derived from elleborum that means luck or cure. In the past, the (poisonous) root was used to prepare medicinal ointments. The white Helleborus is also known as the Christmas rose. The myth is that all plants briefly awakened from their winter slumber when Jesus was born. The Christmas rose forgot to go back to sleep and has, since then, flowered every winter to herald Christmas.

Trivia

Helleborus is one of the few plants to flower in winter (and early spring). Magical powers were therefore attributed to it in the past.

Care

For long lifespans, it is important for the flowers to be properly ripe. Cut some of the stem off and put them in clean water with flower preservative. Preferably position them in a cool place away from the heating and not in full sunlight.
